WATER METER PROCESS CHANGE

NOTIFICATION FROM THE CITY OF NEW YORK
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Chapter 20 of the Rules Governing and Restricting the Use and Supply of Water have been amended by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) according to a notification dated November, 2000.

The change eliminates the requirement that water meters be tested by DEP prior to installation, the Department has modified their permit procedures to eliminate the need for plumbers to bring meters to the Bureau of Customer Services Meter Testing Facility in Brooklyn.

This new procedure took effect October 30, 2000 as announced in a letter signed by Lawrence Schatt, DEP Deputy Commissioner. The Commissioner reiterates the importance of plumbers returning completed meter permits to DEP so that the installations can be inspected and the customers' accounts can be updated. Failure to return permits is a violation returnable to the Environmental Control Board (ECB).
