HPD SPONSORS FREE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) operates a comprehensive set of programs to provide housing resources to owners and intervene to prevent the deterioration and abandonment of troubled buildings throughout the city.

HPD is now implementing a new initiative called PRO Housing - Pathways to Responsible Ownership, to provide a full range of program resources to assist owners in keeping their buildings in good fiscal and physical health. The agency's new Office of Housing Intervention and Resources coordinates this initiative and provides three primary paths to help owners preserve and maintain their properties - education, investment and enforcement. The goal is to empower responsible ownership providing an array of resources and tools to owners. As part of the PRO Housing Initiative, the Housing Education Program (HEP) offers a series of courses to assist owners, managers and superintendents in managing and maintaining their buildings.

HEP's Core Curriculum offers beginning and advanced courses on building management and systems maintenance, as well as multi-session courses on building finances and working with tenants.

In addition to its Core Curriculum, HEP offers several other educational services, including seminars on water and energy conservation and heating plant maintenance. HEP also provides more specialized courses for owners working with HPD's PRO Housing staff and for young people interested in becoming assistant building superintendents.

This year, HEP will reach a growing number of owners and managers through the use of broadcast technology: HEP's introductory management/maintenance course will be simultaneously transmitted to students at locations in their own boroughs from a studio in Manhattan to increase access to this training resource.

HPD invites you to take advantage of this valuable resource and to work together to promote quality housing and viable neighborhoods for all New Yorkers. For further information, copies of the course guide and/or an application call 212-863-8830 or visit their website: www.nyclink.org/hpd.
