THREE SEMINARS AT NYARM REAL ESTATE EXPO '0
A Total of 15 Certification Credits Available To Candidates

In accordance with NYARM's tenet to provide continuing education for the residential property manager, the New York Association of Realty Managers will be presenting three seminars at the Thursday, October 18th NYARM Real Estate Expo '01.

Due to the tragic events of September 11th the Expo has been moved to The New York Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas (between West 53rd and 54th Streets). The Expo hours are unchanged and will continue from 10 AM to 6 PM.

SAVING ENERGY DOLLARS
The day's first forum, "Saving Energy Dollars" will be presented at 9 AM. In this time of skyrocketing electricity costs and high fuel prices, there are some readily available ways to reduce costs in this area. The seminar specialists will discuss NYSERDA's lighting retrofits and energy audit programs. These are low cost programs which can help realize long term savings. The panelists include Dennis Ossipov, Aspen Systems; Constantine Kontogiannis, NYSERDA; and Gerald Pindus, U.S. Energy Controls.

Mr. Ossipov will discuss NYSERDA's Energy Star Program which encourages the replacement of lighting fixtures and appliances with energy conserving products. Mr. Kontogiannis is project manager for NYSERDA's RESTECH and Publicly Assisted Housing Programs. Participating engineering firms conduct energy audits at minimal expense and help pinpoint areas for conservation.

Mr. Pindus will discuss energy management systems which can result in fuel savings. Please note, even though the tradeshow floor opens at 10 AM, this seminar will commence at 9 AM.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY
"Indoor Air Quality" will begin at 11:30 AM. Probably one of the most anticipated discussions of the day, the panelists will discuss prevention and elimination of hazardous wastes and a legal perspective on environmental issues.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), "indoor air is three to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air." Asthma is now considered an epidemic and law suits for building related illnesses range as high as $8 billion. With so much attention focusing on the quality of the indoor environment, both in the home and workplace, maintenance of both the supply and exhaust ventilation systems is a priority.

Confirmed panelists include Paul Coburn, Chute Master; Joe Zoob, NAC Indoor Air Professionals; and Bryan Costello, NAC Environmental. Mr. Coburn will discuss the importance of a ventilation system maintenance program. Due to new developments in equipment and techniques, cleaning the interior areas of a ventilation system are now simple and inexpensive.

Mr. Zoob will discuss the various problems with molds, bacteria and fungi. Mr. Costello will discuss tank testing; reclamation or removal; soil remediation; and hazardous spills.

SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE
"Safety in the Workplace" will commence at 2:30 PM. A safety program can improve the awareness of your employees as to safe work practices. The panelists will explain how to set up a safety committee and involve your employees in the program. Featured speakers are Tom Purnell, The Flanders Group and Heather Spencer, State Insurance Fund Service.

Mr. Purnell is a workers compensation specialist with experience as a principle actuary at the State Insurance Fund. Ms. Spencer has performed numerous safety surveys, given safety training classes and worked with State Insurance Fund clients and their safety committees.

All three seminars carry nyarm certification credits (5 each) and are free. Pre-registration is advised for admittance to the show and seminars, but attendance at the seminars is based on a first come, first serve basis. Seating is limited so it is advisable to arrive within 30 minutes prior to the beginning of each forum. Make sure you sign the attendance roster if you are a nyarm candidate and want certification credit to be applied to your application or need re-certification credits.
